FISHING EXCURSIONS

Hunting for Halibut - Ketchikan

What could be better than spending a relaxing day out on the sparkling water waiting for a halibut to come along? Ketchikan may be known as the "salmon capital of the world" but the pristine waters are also one of the premier halibut fishing locations in the world. And no matter your skill level, you'll fish Alaska's waters just like the locals.

When you're ready to cast off for a day of fun be sure to dress in layers, wear sunscreen and don't forget the camera to capture the moment of your catch (and the one that got away).

Then, you'll walk down the pier and meet your guide who'll escort you to the marina. Upon arrival you'll be lead through the licensing process (the State of Alaska requires those 16 and older to purchase a one-day Alaska fishing license of $20) and then be outfitted like a real Alaskan fisherman. Since Alaska weather can be unpredictable you'll be outfitted with rain gear, rubber boots, a hat and gloves. After a safety briefing, you're ready to board your vessel, a 22-foot custom designed boat.

Now you're ready to cruise out onto the protected waters around Ketchikan. With your experienced fishing guide by your side, you'll learn the secrets to catching halibut by working the sandy flats, drifting with the current, and jigging in waters as deep as 300 feet. Out on the water, you can't help but be in awe of your majestic, pinch-me-I-must-be-dreaming surroundings. While enjoying the peaceful ambience have your camera handy, you may see an occasional eagle flying overhead, a seal playfully bobbing up and down in the water or even a humpback cruising by.

Don't be surprised if, during the day, you hear your guide call out that you've caught a whale, barn door or a chicken. Halibut are among the largest fish in the sea and the largest of all the flatfish. They can grow to more than eight feet long and can weigh up to 700 pounds. Those weighing in at more than 100 pounds are often called whales, soakers, or barn doors; while those weighing less than 20 pounds, are often called chickens.

During the day, sit back with a tasty snack while admiring the scenery and keeping an eye out on your reel. When you catch a halibut you can arrange to have it processed, packaged, frozen, and shipped to your door for an additional charge.

After returning to the dock, your Alaskan fishing guide will assist with taking photos of the day's catch. Finally, you'll walk back to the ship with memories of an authentic fishing trip in the world-renowned waters of Alaska.

Group Size: 6 / 6 Hours from $369.96
Other fishing excursions are also available in Ketchikan

Salmon Sport Fishing Adventure - Juneau

This five hour small-group boating adventure starts when you board your comfortable 26-to-36 ft. enclosed vessel, with a party of no more than six people, and set sail along Stephens Passage.

Skippered by a US Coast Guard-licensed captain, you will be able to fish while enjoying the calm waters and stunning scenery of this incredible state. A snack will be served during the expedition, and your captain will encourage you to keep an eye out for whales, sea lions and eagles.
Those of you lucky enough to catch salmon your catch can be processed locally and shipped to your home for an additional charge, or cooked on board for dinner (limit one fish per person) - it's your choice.

4-5 Hours from $199.95
Other fishing excursions are also available in Juneau

Chilkoot Lake Freshwater Fishing - Skagway

Your adventure begins aboard a high-speed catamaran for a scenic cruise along North America's longest and deepest fjord to Haines. Enjoy spectacular views of waterfalls and ice-sculpted peaks as your guide provides informative commentary and points out marine wildlife.

From Haines, enjoy a scenic 30-minute drive to Chilkoot Lake, one of the most picturesque locations in southeast Alaska. Go fishing aboard a 30-foot pontoon boat surrounded by majestic mountains and Sitka spruce. Chilkoot Lake offers some the best fishing in southeast Alaska with four salmon runs a year from June to October. The lake is home to four of the five salmon species found in Alaska waters as well as Dolly Varden (a type of char) and cutthroat trout. The unique waters of Chilkoot Lake are the perfect habitat for these fish. The cold, clear waters of the swiftly moving creeks created by melting ice fields on the surrounding mountains are ideal for salmon spawning beds. The salmon average 5 lbs. to 15 lbs. depending on species and Dolly Varden are plentiful. Steelhead and cutthroat trout catches, though rare, are always an exciting event.

Spin cast rod/reel, tackle, rain gear and snacks (soft drinks, bottled water, granola bars, candy bars, nuts, cheese and crackers) are provided. Every fisherman is in control of his or her own spin-cast rod and reel. There is a maximum of six guests per boat and the tour operator is the only fishing company on the lake. Your experienced guide assists with everything from new fishing methods to untangling your lines while you relax and absorb the grandeur of the surrounding snow-clad mountains. Fishing is conducted on a catch-and-release basis.
It's an experience suitable for fishermen of all skill levels and a time to truly commune with nature.
